This is our list of the top seven typing match-ups that just don’t seem to make any sense at all. Sit back, relax, and let the obsessive nit-picking begin!
Dark vs. Ghost Types!
When looking over all the Pokémon types and their match-ups, this pairing in particular really bothered me, and still does to this day. Why are Dark Pokémon super effective against Ghost Pokémon? Surely Ghost types wouldn’t have any issues with the Dark at all, considering that ghosts come out in the night. There’s some twisted logic behind this pairing and I still can’t wrap my head around it. Are ghosts in the Pokémon world only associated with day?
Steel vs. Fighting Types!
Another problematic Pokémon pairing is that Steel Pokémon are weak against Fighting moves. I don’t know about you, but whenever I try to punch steel (which, admittedly, isn’t very often) it doesn’t really do a whole lot of damage. In fact, I would say that it’s more logical to assume that Fighting types would get destroyed by Steel Pokémon.
Then again, Machamp does have a lot of arms – that Pokémon could probably do a lot more to a plate of steel than someone like I could. Perhaps I’m not giving the Fighting Pokémon enough credit, but it still seems like a very silly match-up.
Rock vs. Ground Types!
Imagine, if you will, that a rock has some beef with the ground – we don’t know why, but it’s a thing that happened. Now, I think most would imagine in this weird battle that the rock would have the advantage, considering it has the ability to move around. Now, imagine this scenario, except the rock and ground are sentient creatures. However, in Pokémon, Ground types are super effective against Rock types… but not vice versa.
It seems completely bizarre that this is how the typing works between this pair. Perhaps some don’t think it is as crazy as I do, but you would think that even if Rock types didn’t have the advantage that Rock and Ground would just be ineffective against each other.
Bug vs. Psychic Types!
Another weird typing match-up that I believe makes no sense on any level is that Bug type Pokémon are super effective against Psychic Pokémon. It is hard to understand where the logic comes in for this pairing, but I guess there had to be something that Bug types were good against, and it came down to the Psychic type. Either way it is an odd pairing for the Pokémon universe.
Rock vs. Fire Types!
The fact that Rock Pokémon are super effective against Fire Pokémon has always been perplexing to me. Sure, the Fire types may not be able to do much against Rock Pokémon, but I’m not too sure about them being able to beat Fire Pokémon. What would a rock do against a fire in reality? Not a whole lot in reality, but Nintendo says otherwise.
Fairy Type Against Anything!
To start with, the types that Fairy are effective against are downright funny. I mean every single one of them doesn’t make sense in any context whatsoever: Fighting, Dragon, and Dark. Perhaps it is because Fairy is a relatively new type to the series that it just doesn’t seem to fit in any aspect, but the entire typing for Fairy is incredibly weird.
The Fairy type is just a weird typing itself, so it stands to reason that everything it is effective against kind of doesn’t make any sense. However, at least we have adorable Pokémon, like Jigglypuff, who became Fairy types, so all is not lost.
Steel Against Fairy Types! (I Promise I Don’t Hate Fairies)
Fairy type is honestly the most insane Pokémon type, and that’s made apparent in that Steel is effective against Fairy types. Is Steel effective because it’s strong and, I don’t know, hardcore? It seems a weird choice for a weakness for Fairy Pokémon, but when you have something as strange as the Fairy type there aren’t a lot of pairings that’d make sense.
However, we can forgive all the faults of the Fairy type for the sheer cuteness of the majority of the Pokémon of this type. I personally love Snubbull, as it reminds me of my dog with a cute pink coat on it – so you win some, you lose some.

Those were a couple of our thoughts on weird typing match-ups between Pokémon types throughout the series. Evidently, it would seem that the longer the series goes on and the more types that are added to the roster, the deeper we delve further into Pokémon madness.
